You need to print a boarding pass, a school form, or a return label — and the printer is across the room while your phone is in your hand. Printing from your phone should take 30 seconds, and once it’s set up, it does. Here’s how to connect any wireless printer to an iPhone or Android phone, plus what to do when the printer stubbornly refuses to appear.
How do I connect a wireless printer to my phone?
iPhones make this almost insultingly easy — if your printer supports AirPrint (most WiFi printers made after 2015 do). There’s no setup, no app, no pairing:
- Make sure your iPhone and printer are on the same WiFi network. This is the step everyone gets wrong — if your phone is on the 5 GHz band and the printer joined 2.4 GHz with a different network name, they can’t see each other.
- Open whatever you want to print (a photo, email, web page, document).
- Tap Share > Print (in Photos, tap Share then scroll to Print; in Safari, tap Share > Print).
- Tap “Printer” at the top — your AirPrint printer should appear. Select it, choose copies and options, tap Print.
That’s genuinely it. Apple’s AirPrint guide confirms there’s nothing else to configure. If your printer doesn’t appear, skip to the troubleshooting section below.
Android: Three Ways to Print
1. Default Print Service (easiest). Go to Settings > Connected devices > Connection preferences > Printing, and enable “Default Print Service.” Your phone will discover compatible printers (most HP, Canon, Epson, Brother models) on your WiFi automatically. Then: open the file, tap the three-dot menu > Print, select your printer, done.
2. Mopria Print Service. If the default service doesn’t find your printer, install the free Mopria Print Service app from the Play Store — it’s the industry-standard protocol and supports 120+ million printers from all major brands. Enable it in the same Printing settings screen.
3. Manufacturer apps. HP Smart, Canon PRINT, Epson iPrint, and Brother Mobile Connect add features beyond basic printing: scanning from the printer to your phone, checking ink levels, and printing from cloud storage. Worth installing for the brand you own — HP Smart is the most polished of the bunch.
When the Printer Won’t Show Up: Troubleshooting
This is where most people get stuck. Work through this checklist in order:
- Same network, really. Check the printer’s network settings (usually on its small display or a printed network report) and confirm the WiFi name matches your phone’s exactly. Guest networks often isolate devices — printers on the guest network are invisible to phones on the main network.
- Restart everything. Printer off for 30 seconds, phone’s WiFi toggled off and on, router rebooted if you’re feeling thorough. This resolves an embarrassing percentage of cases.
- Move the printer closer temporarily. If it appears when it’s next to the router, you’ve got a signal problem, not a settings problem.
- Update the printer’s firmware. Check the manufacturer’s app — outdated firmware is a common cause of discovery failures, especially with newer phones.
- Re-run WiFi setup on the printer. Printers forget networks after power outages or router changes. Use the printer’s display or the manufacturer’s app to reconnect it fresh.
Printing Without WiFi: The Alternatives
No WiFi? You’ve got options. WiFi Direct lets your phone connect straight to the printer without a router — look for a WiFi Direct network name on the printer’s display and join it from your phone’s WiFi settings. USB-OTG: with a cheap adapter, many Android phones print via USB cable directly. And for the truly desperate, email the file to yourself and print from any computer. If you find yourself hotspot-printing regularly, see how to use your phone as a hotspot — the same tethering that feeds your laptop can feed a WiFi printer too.
Scanning With Your Phone Too
While you’re at it: your phone is also a scanner. iPhone’s Notes app (new note > camera icon > Scan Documents) and Google Drive’s scan feature produce surprisingly good PDFs. For occasional scanning, this beats walking to the printer entirely. The manufacturer’s apps also let you trigger the printer’s flatbed scanner from your phone and receive the scan digitally — handy for multi-page documents where the phone camera would be tedious.
Picking a Phone-Friendly Printer
If you’re printer shopping, prioritize AirPrint/Mopria certification (listed on the box and spec sheet), a companion app with good reviews, and WiFi Direct support. Avoid printers that require desktop software for initial WiFi setup — in 2026, any printer worth buying configures fully from a phone app. Our cheap printer buying guide flags which budget models are the most phone-friendly.
Printing From Anywhere: Cloud Print Options
Need to print something while you’re not home? HP’s ePrint gives every compatible printer its own email address — email a document to it and it prints, from anywhere in the world. Epson Connect and Canon’s cloud services offer similar remote printing. Setup takes five minutes in the manufacturer’s app, and it’s genuinely useful: print the boarding pass from the airport, the permission slip from the office, the recipe from the grocery store. Security note: use the allowlist feature so only your email addresses can print to it — an open printer email address is an invitation for pranksters.
What If Your Printer Isn’t Wireless at All?
Still rocking a USB-only printer? You’re not entirely stuck. A $25–$35 wireless print server (a tiny box that plugs into the printer’s USB port and joins your WiFi) makes old printers network-accessible — then AirPrint/Mopria work as described above. Alternatively, share the printer through a computer that’s always on (Windows printer sharing or a Raspberry Pi with CUPS, for the adventurous). These hacks work fine, but weigh the effort: if your printer is a decade old, the money and time might be better spent on a modern $100 wireless model that just works out of the box.
The Bottom Line
iPhone: same WiFi network, Share > Print, done — AirPrint needs no setup. Android: enable the Default Print Service or Mopria, then print from any app’s menu. When printers don’t appear, it’s almost always a network mismatch — same network name, no guest-network isolation, restart everything. Five minutes of setup buys you years of print-from-the-couch convenience.
